Electrical Panel Upgrades for Level 2 EV Chargers

How load calculations, panel capacity, and dedicated-circuit requirements influence a Level 2 home-charging plan.

Originally published Guide updated

This updated guide retains the topic and publication record of a prior SoCal article; the guidance has been rewritten for the new site.

01

The charger is one part of the load

A Level 2 charging plan begins with the vehicle, charging equipment, desired charging speed, and the home’s existing electrical loads. The panel label or service rating alone is not a complete capacity review.

02

An upgrade is not automatic

Field verification may support the planned circuit as proposed, identify a different equipment setting or control approach, or show that service changes are needed. The appropriate path depends on compatible equipment and documented load conditions.

03

Confirm the complete installation

Ask the electrician to address circuit routing, charger or receptacle type, mounting location, equipment instructions, permitting, inspection, and any utility coordination. Final pricing should follow confirmation of those details.
