Warning Signs of Faulty Electrical Wiring in a Home
Recurring trips, unusual heat or odors, damaged devices, and other conditions that deserve a professional evaluation.
Originally published Guide updated
This updated guide retains the topic and publication record of a prior SoCal article; the guidance has been rewritten for the new site.

Conditions worth investigating
Recurring trips, flickering, intermittent power, warm devices, buzzing, discoloration, or unusual odors can point to different problems. The symptom is useful evidence, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
Respond safely
Do not keep resetting a breaker or using a device that is hot, damaged, sparking, or producing a burning odor. Move away from immediate danger, call 911 for fire or active arcing, and contact an electrician for the remaining concern.
What diagnosis should establish
A useful diagnostic visit should reproduce or trace the reported condition when possible, test accessible components, and explain the findings before repair work is authorized. If concealed wiring or additional access is needed, that next step should be stated clearly.
