Exterior Lighting Maintenance for Property Security
Maintenance considerations for exterior lighting around commercial properties, shared areas, and nighttime access points.

This updated guide retains the topic and publication record of a prior SoCal article; the guidance has been rewritten for the new site.

Start with nighttime use
Exterior lighting should support entrances, walkways, parking areas, loading points, and other places people actually use after dark. A nighttime review can reveal dark gaps, glare, blocked light, and fixtures aimed away from the intended area.
Maintain the whole system
Failed lamps or fixtures are only part of the maintenance picture. Controls, mounting, lenses, seals, vegetation, and difficult-access locations can all affect performance and service planning.
Set practical priorities
Document urgent outages, frequently occupied areas, access requirements, and recurring failures before scheduling work. For managed properties, a clear location list and completion record make future maintenance easier to coordinate.
